A Free River
It was an almost spiritual experience to see an unfettered river system and the wilderness that feeds it. The entire Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness, the largest single expanse of land above 10,000 ft. in elevation, is the watershed for the Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River, in turn, is the longest undammed river left in these United States. It is over 670 miles in length as it flows from it's sources in Yellowstone National Park. In my humble opinion, not only is it the longest damn undammed river in the U.S., but also the FINEST! Makes the Colorado River look like a crassly commercial amusement park.
The photos below don't come close to doing the river justice. If you like rivers, promise yourself a pilgrimage to Montana and Wyoming to see the real deal.
